Mycelium growth is confusing

I've tried to understand the way mycelium grows, as it stands my understanding is that it needs a certain light level to grow or stay alive. Mycelium disappear underneath mushrooms entrely when it is night unless you've lit up the area. It feels really weird that fungal threads are so filmsy to lower light levels as one would expect them to thrive in darkness rather than light.
