Texture question about axle for flowerchild.

So I'm doing a little bit of texture work and trying to figure out a creative texture for the axle but one thing I've never actually understood is what exactly is the intended purpose of the rope in the axle? Like is it just wrapped around the axle for supporter or does it also run through the center of the axle and do something on the inside?
I have a few creative ideas but I want to texture it in a way that makes sense to the mechanical purpose of the item

I think the original intent I had with that (we're talking many years ago now, so it's a bit foggy) was that wrapping the rope around it would reinforce the wood and reduce splintering under torque.

But yeah, it's intended to be a wrap.
