Creepers doing no damage underground in dirt corridors?

I'm not sure if this is a bug or if it's even new, but every time a creeper wanders into my dirt corridor bases and blows up like right in my face, I get no damage, but am standing in the middle of a crater afterwards.

Has anyone noticed reduced damage from creepers? I'm wondering if the new dirt mechanics somehow sabotage their splash damage, but it's hard to deduct this from just 4 explosions. 3 were underground and right in my face, one was aboveground and nearly killed me.

Also, does anyone know if this is just vanilla behavior?

Yeah, the fact that it happens in small corridors makes me think it might be related to the new gravity dirt, but it might be an old thing from vanilla that I didn't notice before, because in the past, I would always have a weapon on me and I'd never make a base in a corridor of dirt.

Except that bug report is completely different from what I reported. There were no slabs and the creepers did 0 hearts, not 0.5.

I've tried reproducing it using spawned in creepers, can't get it to work. They kill me in 1 hit. Really strange.

Please be careful when linking bugs from the VMC bug tracker. The one you found is specifically for Minecraft Pocket Edition.
However there is a relevant bug report for The PC Edition of Minecraft as well.

To be noted this is not the exact bug that Gil has posted about but it's a potential contender.

I figured out the "bug"! Basically, when you stand inside a campfire (or maybe when the creeper is inside it), it does almost no damage, meaning if a creeper walks into your hole, you can just quickly hop onto your campfire to negate damage mostly.
