battleaxe using food when chopping vegetation?

Noticed this when hacking at local vegetation that my food bar was shaking, whereas with a diamond axe this isn't the case. Seemed like a bit of a discrepancy to me since diamond axe level was able to cut down leaves and grass without durability loss or hunger loss. Not sure if battleaxe is taking durability damage from hacking at leaves either.
