Villager trades don't accumulate XP

Not sure if actual bug or if I'm just doing something wrong, but: Whenever I complete a trade with a villager, I get the red X in the window and the sprites around the villager when I close the window, but upon interacting with the villager again, no progress was made to the XP bar even though a new trade is now being offered.
At first I thought it was just my texture pack not displaying the correct elements of the interface, but the problem persists with vanilla textures.
