Your identity in music

Post by Gilberreke »

Fun idea I thought of. Everyone should post 5 songs (no more, no less) that defines your personal identity, who you are.

I think I'm going with these:

T-Rex - Children of the Revolution

Pixies - Where is my mind

The Beatles - Fool on the Hill

Wallace Collection - Day Dream

R.E.M. - Man on the Moon

I feel a little out of place posting here, seeing as I might be just a *tad* younger than some of you :P

And boy was it tough picking 5 songs... but I just decided to go with my all time favorites.

@kaos I am 17. my music choices are what they are because my parents listened to that kind of music, and I ended up falling in love with it.

Wow. I couldn't even begin to think of songs that are /me/. Plenty of songs that fit times in my life or situations, but not really any that are my identity. I'll reserve this space if I can manage five.

EDIT: Okay, that was surprisingly easy.

I thought about throwing Legs, by ZZ Top in there, but if I figured that'd be a bit presumptuous of me ;)

Oh. I guess I shouldn't be so presumptuous.

Still, I have a feeling not many share my musical tastes :P

In no particular order..
Spoiler
Show
Pink Floyd -- Comfortably Numb

Boston -- A Man I'll Never Be

Wagner -- Siegfried's Funeral March

Gov't Mule -- Beautifully Broken

ABBA -- Take a Chance on Me
I tend to agree with Laira a bit, on picking music like this, but at this place in my life, the above in some way, shape or form, is highly meaningful.

The only problem that I see with these kinds of thread is that they don't really go anywhere. No discussion generally results, it's just a big collection of people saying something about themselves and only themselves.

I dunno, they're good for those moments when you want to listen to something different.

Hoo boy. Impossible to single out only 5 songs..

I will try my best though. For many many reasons the 5 songs below are deeply ingrained in my soul and speak volumes on who I really am. They each defined moments in my life that changed a lot of what I am, and how I perceive music in general, but didn't really stop there..

DISCLAIMER: Any hints of insanity hinted by the specific selection of the following 5 songs is purely coincidental.

Ulver were the band that are 99% responsible for my musical identity from 2000 and onwards. They were the spark that led to an unforgettable decade of musical experimentation and broadened my horizons so much that I wouldn't be listening to 99% of the music I listen to today if it wasn't for them.

You can substitute married with a lot of things in the above song, and it will hold true for me..
This occupies a dark place in my heart.

What ulver did for more experimental music, radiohead did for..well I hate to use the title alternative, but that's what it was. And radiohead do still occupy an even darker place in the core of my soul, especially this song. It's lyrics feel as if I wrote them myself.

Yeah yeah, say what you want. I'm not a huge fan of coldplay, but this particular song marks a very intense moment in my life where a lot of what I would be in the future was shaped. Booze and a girl were included, in large doses. :P

Eh, because I'm not only into depressing music, and the exact opposite part of myself is nicely summed up by this.
I feel obliged to mention a few runners up though, that do define my identity but randomly did not make it in here.

Hehe "fun" part of my life.

No particular reason...

Described my life at a time.

No words to describe
I guess it is bad most of the songs describing my life are sad, well sad songs sound amazing when done right.

I like things to be simple, and my life reflects that. But not boring.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Yeah, I'll leave this open for another day or so and then lock it. There's no use in keeping a lag thread like this on the first page. I just think it's a cool social experiment to perform for yourself (the idea suddenly popped in my head and I felt I needed to share).

I also suddenly realized that the idea popping in my head is probably related to my love for "High Fidelity". Trying to categorize events, people, etc, into a five song list is a pretty powerful way to express yourself for some reason :)

Oh, I thought it a very cool idea too, hence my participation. I guess I was just lamenting that none of these threads never really evolves into anything more :)

I guess an internet forum is just too anonymous to really dig into things like this. We need to all go to a bar and get drunk together for that :)
