Hi all,
Recently I had an incident at my base (built on a shallow part of a swamp biome), where a ghast spawned due to possession from filtering ground netherrack. I was unaware that the netherrack filtering could cause possession (I built my portal further away from my base), so for now I built a vertical windmill for netherrack processing in the nether.
So how do the possession mechanics from filtering and possessed wolves actually work. The wiki is somewhat opaque on this issue, it specifies the range from a nether portal, but not for filtering. I am assuming it is a similar range, but I am really curious about how possession is actually implemented. Are the souls some form of entity that persist and travel to nearby mobs or is it just an event that checks for mobs within a certain range.
Thank you if you have any insight into this mechanic.

Re: Possession range for filtering netherrack?
No it's not an entity, it's just a one-time event that checks for animal, but if there's nothing to be possessed in range, nothing happens
