OBS does not record gloom overlay

Post by dawnraider »

I noticed with recording BTW videos that OBS does not actually record the gloom overlay. Even though in game I can't see anything, in my video it looks like vanilla darkness.

That's strange, in my own videos gloom shows as pitch darkness even with in game brightness maxed. I am also using OBS to record my videos

Yeah I'm not sure. I recorded a few videos today and they're all pitch black in gloom like normal. Just one of my earlier ones (Episode 6 I believe) had me in gloom, but reviewing the footage I could see just fine. And that episode was recorded on 4.AAABBBA as well so that didn't change it. But unless I run into it again I'll just call it a one time fluke.

If you can figure out what caused this bug it'd be really interesting to know. Imagine your stream being able to see in the gloom but the player still being blind. Might be really interesting for viewers to see that zombie coming at the player knowing the player is unaware.

So I think I figured it out, and it's actually not OBS at all. My main monitor has an IPS panel with properly calibrated color, and everything appears black on it, in MC and in OBS. But my second monitor is a cheap TN monitor, and if I have MC or OBS on it, I can see in gloom.

Edit: Picture to show. I am standing in a block with light level 1 looking into gloom.

I really doubt it would be a monitor issue. Video card maybe, but the monitor shouldn't have anything to do with it.

If gloom is being rendered correctly, there's literally no data to display other than a solid black, so there'd be nothing for the monitor to display a variance in. Hence why gamma correction doesn't work on it.

However, if it's not being rendered as that solid black, which would be the video card's job, then there would be data for the monitor to display.

Just tested with my laptop, and gloom does work appropriately on the monitor. So you are likely right that it's a video card issue. It's quite strange though that the monitors aren't displaying the same thing since it should be the same image - OBS is recording directly off of Minecraft. I can test with my 2nd video card once that gets back from RMA (temperature sensor was broken).
