Are silverfish still in the game?

I havn't seen any silverfish in my world by now.

I'm not sure if I'm lucky or if something is wrong.

Do they spawn with time or are they seeded when the world is generated?

They only generate inside strongholds and extreme hills.

Edit: Also, just for the sake of completeness, silverfish also spawn in the End under certain conditions.

Thanks.
I only mined in extreme hills biomes earlier and thought silverfish were a general danger.
It seemed so fitting for the mod, so I never questioned that.
