Custom worlds

Post by WeedFather »

I'm just curious, aside from Eldaria, does anyone other than me play BTW on custom worlds? I know there's someone actually trying to make a custom world tailored AROUND BTW, but there's no telling when that's gonna be done.

I know that the person who made Biomes 'o Plenty made a tweaked add-on version of the mod especially for BTW, but then he got into some trouble over BSing to FlowerChild or something like that and got banned, and how FlowerChild actually saw some serious balance issues with Biomes o' Plenty. Tough honestly, the only add-on I want is a fricken draw distance add-on. Not a suggestion in any way. Just statin' my desire.

i made a skybox map for btw and played on that for a long time and was working on a better one.
but sadly that died out with hardcore spawn.
<FlowerChild> if I wasn't serious, I would have just fucked you and left :)

Ah, I see. I always wanted to create something like what I've seen with the Terrain Control plugin, but that's for bukkit or FORGE only. I curseth Forge's name!

I played Eldaria before HCspawn, but after that and the addition of HCstrat, custom survival maps just don't seem viable anymore.

Yeah, Eldaria was a great custom world to play on, but ever since hardcore spawn was added, I would often end up spawning in the ocean for some reason, which changed when I installed a fresh version of the world, but then there's still the whole lack of strata and passive mobs issue.

I mean, there are some times when I do find some good seeds for 1.5.2 with a nice terrain layout. Nothing breath-taking, but still rather scenic, like this one seed called "book". Still, most of the time, it's pretty boring. It's like, "if you go over here, you will see a grass plains biome which is (respectfully) flat and doesn't have much going on for it!" It's flat and nothing too special with lack of trees and much of anything, but it's supposed to be like that, and it's scenic. "but if you look to your left, you will see a flat forest biome with short, stumpy, boring trees! And if you look to your right, you will see a flat taiga biome with some fairly nice tall trees! And if you look straight ahead, you will see a flat, ugly-as-shit swamp, biome with short, stumpy trees with vines on them!"

It is surprisingly hard to find a decent custom terrain map that feels like an undiscovered minecraft world and not like a blocky recreation of some continent or landscape painting (except for the awesome, romantic landscape paintings). It is also hard to find one that is not a rigid adventure map with redstone events all over it. There was one that was almost perfect, until I noticed that someone pretty much gutted it of almost all of it's ores and stone underneath the crust.

I'd had plans to build a custom survival map designed specifically for play with BTW, but it's been shelved for the time being.

So you're the one who was making that custom map for BTW? I thought your avatar looked familiar, but I didn't bother to go back and look for the thread. Well, if you ever do continue on it, I wish you luck.

I've thought of trying to make my own custom map, but I don't really know where to begin with that or how long it would take, and I'm sure it wouldn't be much of a masterpiece.

For the record, skyblock maps should still work in BTW. I remember quite clearly Flowerchild special casing hardcore spawn rules specifically for maps like Renewablock that had nothing at sea level to spawn onto. If you delete all blocks on a custom map to leave a border of void it should keep the player withing the designated play area.

The server I'm on pre-rendered the map with Better World Gen Mod.

HC spawn feels biased to the southern half of the map.
- but this might be due to the ocean in the north.

Mm. I would try creating a world with a mod and then re-installing BTW, if that's what you mean, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work for me. The last time I tried that, it created some preeeety big seams in the world since the rest of it would generate as normal after the mod was uninstalled. Also, I don't see how places like Indev and cave dimension would work with the new lighting.

I would like to see this server some day out of curiosity, but I'm not very active in multiplayer lately, and nobody seems to know me THAT well. I wouldn't want to overstay my welcome here, especially since I mostly lurk.

There would be some fairly messy stuff where custom gen meets BTW gen, and you'll lose the strata.
(There was another thread mentioning a MCedit filter to remake that)

Actually you could MCedit/Worldedit the surface to hide the seams, depends on the size of the pre-render.

-The server I'm on is 10000x10000 , then a few hundred blocks of void before the vanilla generation. Having the world just end is a bit neater than terrain seams.

Indev and cave worlds should be playable as long as they have a normal surface. You might not be able to use every BTW feature mind.

The server is whitelisted, but its not as strict as the official server- you'll be welcome to come on and hang out for a bit.

HCStrat is one of the biggest deterrents for using in-game mods to craft custom maps. I generally prefer WorldPainter with MCEdit for touch-up work because I can make a map outside of the game and load it for the first time with BTW installed and get stratification without issues.

Meh. It kind of feels a bit over my head, but I'll try and look into it...some day. Is worldpainter hard? I guess I can try and find out myself!

Update: After downloading it and trying it a VERY little bit, I actually think that this is something that I could use! I'm gonna experiment with it and read some guides.
