I just died after 20+ hours into my world, I spawned in a random place, I don't have a compass, what do I do?!

You setup a base until you can craft a compass and you can go back.

Do I need a diamond pickaxe to access the layer that redstone is in? Because I cannot get down past the second layer of stone (the first hard layer). And how would I get the diamonds if they are in the layer I cannot get down to?

You do know that Flowerchild disabled f3 coordinates right? But back to my question, I cannot break a certain layer with an iron pickaxe, how to I get lower since I know redstone is below that layer. (I think at least.)

Serious answer: you can mine ore if you have the appropriate level of pickaxe for the ore, regardless of what color stone it's in. Ie: you can mine diamonds and redstone in the bottom layer of stratification with an iron pickaxe, even though you can't mine the plain stone around them.

As Elevatator said, you have to find a cave that goes deep enough to get to the ore in the first place.

EDIT: Or, for the truly stubborn, you could build a mob farm and try to creeper-mine your way down :)
