I find the changes very fitting to the game, especially the darkness.
I've always found moody setting to butcher light without providing enough darkness and bright being simply too bright.
Now it's just perfect.
As a side effect, mushrooms that give out light of 1 AFAIK, aren't visible anymore.
EDIT: whoops, axes indeed still melt to 3 ingots as mentioned on IRC.
That is actually a little sad. I was looking forward to the post from someone talking about how the phosphorescent fungus growing in a pitch black cave led them to fall into a ravine after they got dropped down a hole.

"It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue."
I could not possibly like this any more.
morvelaira: Not all Minecraft players have stamped down the knee-jerk, lawful-good Superman reaction yet. We do hold a rather high proportion of the enlightened on these forums flowerchild: Not to mention a mod that trains the player to be rather morally ambivalent
This is perfect for me, since I have some sun glare in my screen, so I have to play on Bright all the time to see my screen. With this update, I get the best of both worlds really. Works just right it seems.
Speaking as somebody with nyctophobia, this new addition adds a whole new level of immersion to the game. Now I'm actually feeling genuine fear when I start running low on torches during those long spelunking trips. So cheers, mate :)
