Adapted blindness?

Since the introduction of HCH, I have suffered the 'dying' effect multiple times, and have got the blindness potion effect from it. However, when I was blind, no blocks were visible at all - just darkness all around. Blindness normally allows you to see the blocks around you.
Is this a dodgey install or an adapted effect?

In my experience with near death experiences, I can see a few blocks away at my feet. I can't see mobs until they are right on top of me. Hope this helps.

depends on how dark your screen is. Mine is pretty light so I can see a few blocks around me but my bf's is somehwat dark and can only see about half a block around him when blinded :/
