Block ID and Texture Pack color.properties problems

Hey guys,

I'm hoping any texture pack artists out there can help me out, I'm wondering whether or not this is a bug.

I've been having problems matching the colours between plank blocks and the mouldings/sidings/pedestals etc using the tintcolor.png (tint) setting in the color.properties file of my texture pack. My problem essentially arises when adding ID 5 (planks) to the tint setting and then adding ID 199 (pedestal/column). The plank blocks tint fine but the pedestals/columns don't. When I add ID 197 (moulding) to the tint setting, the only moulding that tints is the spruce version, however the spruce pedestals/columns also tint, despite apparently being ID 199 (The other columns/pedestals don't tint).

It's difficult to explain and it feels like a bug to me, I'm not sure whether or not FC directly supports settings for texture packs considering he doesn't use them himself, and I know this is just a minor cosmetic thing, but I thought I'd draw attention to the problem anyway on the off chance that someone else has come across this problem?

The different kinds of sub blocks should (should, I may be wrong) have different ids per wood type. Each moulding takes up almost entire id (12 orientations) while sidings and corners share an id (8 + 6 = 14 orientations) which doesn't leave enough metadata to declare the type of wood (as that would require 2 out of 4 bits for all 4 types, and all 4 bits are used in some form). The columns and pedestals could feasibly take up the same ids as moulding as they would add another 3 states to the metadata, which there is room. This is all inferred off of FC's previous posts though, I have never looked at the code or done texturing stuff, so I could be wrong about this.

Yeah the different mouldings etc all use metadata of the main Block ID number, but the color.properties file adds the tint to the whole block ID, including any blocks which are assigned a metadata too, which is why I'm confused about why the colours are being applied to the wrong block ID's.

The mouldings all use ID 197 with different metadata per wood type. I should point out that I'm reading the info I get when pressing f3 and H to display IDs. I'm assuming they are displaying correctly.

Well I discovered something very weird. I checked out the values using the f3 + H that you were talking about, and all the mouldings were 197. I then opened my creative world in MCEdit after putting down some different sub blocks, and they did in fact have differing id's (i.e. spruce moulding was still 197, but birch was 199). So it looks like you'll have to put the blocks in the world and view them using MCEdit (hover over the block and hold alt to see the data for the block) to get the correct data.

Some of those aren't correct. As I said, the data you get from f3+H is not the same as the actual data in world for wood sub blocks (and possibly others I haven't looked apart from those), and that list has the f3+H data. Once I have time I can create a list that does have the correct data (probably tomorrow night).

There is a fairly complete Block ID list in the mod and texture pack forum. You may need to scroll through to get updates as i'm not sure when the OP was last updated.

Yes of course, this is the first post I read when I found myself having problems, it reports the mouldings all as being 197 which I have found to be incorrect, Dawnraider seems to have discovered the same thing. I'm not sure if it really constitutes a bug though, considering it's such a minor problem and only affects a very specific part of texture editing.

I hope that this is the info that you were looking for in the first place. After this however I fear I am out of ideas.

Edit: Upon further investigation, things are all sorts of funky town. The list isn't lying, however it seems that there is some overwriting being done when the list was generated. If we are for instance to look at item ID 201, spawn in the first 4 metavalues and you will get what the list says you should get, and then it repeats until we run out of metadata values. But when we look in MCEdit or other programs we can see that the placed block values for 201 are the jungle wood blocks. I have a sneaking suspicion that it has to do with the way that MC stores IDs internally. Iirc, there is both a block list and an item list. Anyhoo, food for thought :)

It's worth noting that I performed an awful lot of funkiness over the years of developing BTW with regards to how different blocks use blockIDs and metadata to identify themselves. This isn't always consistent or logical on a surface level either as the mod was developed iteratively over time, an overall system for handling stuff like this wasn't designed from the get go, and the longer it went, the more desperate my measures became to try and conserve blockIDs given the limited number that used to be available.

Just to say: that you can expect things to be funky in there. I don't support modding the mod, texture packs included, so this isn't anything I intend to document or change, but did want to just step in for a moment and state clearly that everything is working as intended, but that may not be the least bit intuitive for people doing what you guys are.

No problem, I kinda figured it might have been just something internal, but without any major programming experience I wasn't sure. I also didn't expect a fix because I think I have seen you mention somewhere before about not specifically supporting modification/texturing etc.

Like I said it's a very minor problem that I don't think anyone else has even noticed, so I can easily work around it. Thanks for clearing it up, I appreciate it :)
