Re: Sharing useful designs that get the job done
Automatic soul bottler: I tweaked around with my soul bottler design in creative to remove the water and make it Nether compatible. It's still manual loading, so you have to put in the ground netherrack and keep it filled with urns, but once it is, it operates at 26 urns per minute. It also fits in...

Re: Mod Api Discussion (by Mojang)
Most of the discussion wasn't even really about the API itself, but about some kind of automatic mod distribution system. I saw a post topping the minecraft reddit the other day titled something like "What I want from the Mod API". The entire thing said nothing of the actual API and essen...

So everyone seems to be speculating on what salt will be for, but what I'm just as curious about is how it will be made.

Re: Sharing useful designs that get the job done
Waterless automatic saw: For a long time I was doing all my sawing by hand using a saw placed vertically above me, as I couldn't think of an autosaw design I was happy with. Then I realised I could copy the (near) exact design I use for the bottom of my soul bottler and even keep the saw in the sam...

Re: Iron Golems drop XP
Silly people. You get XP from smelting iron because you are smelting the souls OUT of the iron. XP orbs make for weak iron because they're weak souls that couldn't make it to the nether. You need to get them out of the iron to get good iron, and replace them with nether souls to get the good stuff....

Re: Iron Golems drop XP
I think flavor-wise it makes sense for a golem to not have a soul, but mechanics-wise they don't drop xp for the same reason snow golems don't drop xp. You could make them yourself and just farm the xp from them.

Re: Sharing useful designs that get the job done
http://i.imgur.com/y8vX1.png That is a really clever design which I'd never considered before. Would be very handy in the nether. Did you actually try it without the redstone? I believe I did, and more than that while running around my base I hear this setup placing and removing blocks when there a...

Sharing useful builds that get the job done
So I thought it'd be useful to have a thread similar to 'Show us your builds', but aimed at sharing small structured designs for useful devices you've built in BTW. They don't have to be the best, fastest designs ever, nor be super complex (simple is a plus imo). Just things you've found useful that...

Re: Zombie Pigman Spawning
EDIT: Sorry, it's 128 blocks. 144 was the old limit. Also, going through the wiki entry on spawning, I believe what I said above is correct. There is absolutely no mention of view distance affecting spawning. I can confirm that, I've been running over the spawning code in detail over the past few d...

Re: Grate's using less wood?
It's a non issue though since wood is so easy to come by even without automation. I think that is the answer there. It could be balanced out to 2 grates per 4 sticks to fall in line with the price of slats, but what does it matter when it is just wood? If you want more grates, plant more trees (or ...

Re: The mechanics of mob spawning in the sky
Does this imply that everything from bedrock up to the lc value is loaded? Or to put it otherwise, would machinery at bedrock level still function whilst the player is cavorting at Y=256? I believe yes. My ground base is only a few chunks over from this skyisland, and everything seems to carry on d...

Re: The mechanics of mob spawning in the sky
You know where it says 'lc:207' right next to the biome data? It's the y value to which nearby chunks are loaded, and if it's less than 255, spawning messes up in skytraps. If you climb to the top of your spawner, then go back down to where you are, it should work fine IIRC. Standing below it with ...

The mechanics of mob spawning in the sky
This just details some of my ongoing explorations into the weird ways in which the spawning of hostile mobs at high y values seems to work. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me knows what's going on. So with the return to mob farms in BTW, I set about making a skyisland mob farm 128 blocks up...

Re: Automated log farm with 11 high tree growth area
With the design as it was though, keeping the log pusher below the dirt block at most it can be 8 or 9 high for growing right? I remember in my checking of different pine varieties there were a few 10 high that would be incompatible, but I guess 9 would get most of them. Is there a documented list a...

Automated log farm with 11 high tree growth area
I posted a pic of this in the builds thread, but decided it could use a thread of it's own for searchability sake. I'd been putting off trying to make an automated tree farm for a long time, not able to work out how it could be done without horribly complex redstone, but then I saw this beautiful va...

I've been playing around with tweaking Stormweaver's vanilla tree farm and finally got the design to what I wanted: http://i.imgur.com/47TTz.png That's an auto tree farm with an 11 high growth area, which harvests raw logs and works on most shapes of pine, birch and jungle trees. Sometimes it will w...
