Re: X:COM 2
I'll chip in an agreement - Long War is a 100% improvement on vanilla X-Com, and it's awesome that the devs are willing to admit that. There's no way X-Com 2 will fully embrace the Long War philosophy; I don't think that level of brutally hard game has the same degree of mass market appeal. But hope...

Re: Can't figure out a low-tech item detector
That is really clever, and avoids needing to drop the seeds at a diagonal to the chickens.

Re: Can't figure out a low-tech item detector
My pre-steel auto chicken farm runs on an item-decay timer and seems to work fine - it's a bit complicated, but fun to watch in action. I have eight chickens in 1x1 cells, each standing on a powered hopper. The chickens are diagonally adjacent to 1x1 cells where dispensers drop seeds on the ground. ...

Pixel Piracy is currently 75% off, and apparently recently much-updated - at least according to the Terraria forums.

Re: I am beginning to believe that nether portals hate me
Man, tell me about it. My main world has seen nothing but ocean portals, and I don't know how I'll ever find a village. With my luck, when I finally do find one it'll be because the portal decided to open directly in the middle of the village, and everyone will be converted to witches before I can d...

Bloodborne
If there are any Dark Souls fans on this forum... well, you probably already got Bloodborne. But on the off chance you haven't yet, do so. It is basically Dark Souls 3. Also one of its central conceits is transforming weapons, which is awesome. There is a longsword that transforms into a warhammer. ...

Totally ruined my day a week ago when I found out.
I've been following Monty Oum since Haloid. Words cannot describe the loss.

Re: Factorio: A game all about automation
Hm... I dunno how I feel about that plan, honestly. It kinda sounds to me like "Our plan for the endgame is to force you to start playing an entirely different game than the one you have been playing so far". I can see it working... but it also sounds like the kind of "grand plans&quo...

Re: Factorio: A game all about automation
Not happy with DyTech myself. It's basically the lowest common denominator of endgame design, IMO. Solar Panel Mk2. Also Mk3. Also Mk4... Also ~everything~ MkMOAR. I think the design notes list an Assembler Mk10 or something insane like that. It doesn't seem to add a whole lot of actually new conten...

Re: Should i buy Dawn of War - Master Collection ?
DoW2 has slightly-above-average gameplay, lame plot, but a surprisingly fun metagame element to the campaign - gearing out your soldiers and deciding which missions to take and which to ignore was quite enjoyable. It's definitely not an RTS, though. It plays much more like a WarCraft III "hero ...

Hah. Yeah, I'm seriously considering using the mod that turns off time-based enemy evolution but seriously cranks up pollution-based evolution, as to me that is a really interesting mechanic.

Re: Factorio: A game all about automation
Just wanted to take a moment to praise Factorio's game design. My friend and I finally got to oil processing and were struggling to figure it out without wiki/walkthough. I was having a really hard time with some bits - why do my refineries keep stopping? What is the point of the conversion recipies...

Re: Factorio: A game all about automation
For me at least, multiplayer is a huge selling point - in the same way that BTW or Terraria don't really hold my interest single player, being able to share Factorio with a friend pretty much guarantees I'll be putting a lot of hours into it, and convincing my friend to buy it ASAP. Definitely prefe...

Re: Hardcore Sinkholes: looking for feedback
I think I have to disagree with that. You are entering a desert - therefore you can foresee sinkholes in your future. :) To my mind, it's the same as "if you go outside at night in a dark forest, you will be attacks by mobs you don't see coming. Solution: Don't do that." "If you enter...

Re: Hardcore Sinkholes: looking for feedback
I'll put a vote in favor of sinkholes - they make unexplored deserts a lot more interesting instead of safe zones.
They have also led to me carrying around easily broken blocks for the sole purpose of "testing" the ground by placing blocks, which is fun.

Also, another quote that made me laugh... "And we need storytellers to leave our industry forever." There is a response to that quote in the comments that I think is very relevant, by MiZu. I completely agree with their sentiment: It's not that games need to not have story, it's that game...

Re: Interest Check: Better Than Tomb of Horrors?
Ideally I am looking for 4 players. I'm not sure exactly how many I have right now... 5 is okay, too, though. Play-by-post is my plan, yes. Everyone will be in one group. You are competing against the two groups I ran this dungeon for in person. Because this would be a very short dungeon if it ended...

Okay, sounds like there is enough interest for me to do this. It also sounds like most of you aren't familiar with Pathfinder, though. Is anyone familiar with 3.5 Dungeons and Dragons? The Pathfinder ruleset is very similar, and if you are experienced with 3.5 you will probably be able to pick up Pa...

Interest Check: Better Than Tomb of Horrors?
Any old school D&D or Pathfinder fans around these parts? I recently found myself converting the infamous killer dungeon, the Tomb of Horrors, to the Pathfinder ruleset. In the process, it struck me how much the dungeon's "learn by dying" philosophy reminds me of Better Than Wolves. So...

Re: My feelings on forests
That is a really cool idea. I am going to personally implement a self-rule that breaking the lowest block of a tree requires first breaking the dirt block directly beneath it (effectively "digging up" the stump) to encourage myself to leave stumps behind. :)
