Re: How do you light up your base?

If you really don't want to see torches all over the place, you can hide them by putting one belowground, then placing a siding on top of it so it looks like a full block (for a sidewalk, for example). The same trick can work around walls, though obviously the ability to do that depends on your arch...

Just put a handcrank next to the bellows and you can work them by hand just fine.

Re: Help with vine farms

A friend of mine has this set up at his 'base' A turntable, a saw, and 4 vines. Powered from bellow and above. http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j328/McRawny/2013-01-18_141919_zps064a3508.png I'm quite surprised that works, actually. Pretty sure FC changed it so gearboxes would blow in a setup li...

Only aquaduct I've built so far. Not sure whether it counts as compact though. The windmill is purely decorational, btw, as a waterwheel actually powers the pumps. Can't have my crops going dry when it snows :P

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion

Have to hand it to them that they did a great job on those blocks. Now if only they could get that shiny feel to it that the floors in heaven in Diablo 3 had... I'd never build with anything else anymore :P

My experience with puzzles like these are that all digits MUST be used exactly once, in which case you would have to rethink some of those solutions. 3 would have to be (2^0 - 1) + 3, for example.

Re: Any way to make compact note block songs?

Did some thinking on this earlier and you could probably combine the BDs with the sequencer idea to make a fairly compact, randomizable music-generator. A single track as he built it is comparable to one or more BDs activating certain noteblocks at certain times, so a single track can be built far m...

Re: Any way to make compact note block songs?

So effectively a "16-block piston-ring in a box". Certainly would be more compact than Disco's setup above, though programming the song might be a bit trickier.

Re: Any way to make compact note block songs?

Most "compact" version I've seen that plays non-trivial songs. It's even randomizable as apparently any combination of channels sounds good! mjLDM1AY1-E Could also go for the piston-ring "sheet-music" version, but you'd have to make sure you're far enough away from the piston-rin...

Oh, no offense taken. It just felt like I was the catalyst for this post and I figured I'd at least explain my point of view. Then again, my point of view might be mostly academical as the likelihood of it messing up is probably pretty small. I have sort of trained myself to consider what-ifs for my...

Re: Buddy Blocks: a BTW P.S.A.

Since this post feels rather squarely aimed at me (me and BlackCat had a discussion on irc about this), I'd like to clarify what I mean by unreliable: On one of my maps I have a wool farm. It works by extending pistons in front of the BDs, which are then activated to suck the wool right off the shee...

I stand corrected. You'd be better off using BlackCat's version as I did miss that particular drawback. Use of the buddy block makes more sense now.

Re: Melon farm design (by S.W.)

If the cost of the buddy block is an issue, the two designs can be combined into a vertically tilable one at the cost of a tiny chance to jam: http://www.bottledindigo.com/btw/melons.jpg It mostly works the same, but it might get stuck if a melon manages to grow in that brief moment that the piston ...

Hmm... If I had to guess, I'd say the vanilla hopper will likely end up with the name "funnel" in BtW :P I agree with you, Sarudak, that the buddy block always did feel a bit "off" to me (then again, I never used it to begin with, as it's a single-pulse-and-never-a-peep-again sys...

Re: Help with On/Off inset 3x3 Hibachi

any solid block will do. I only used a gold one there so I would be able to point it out. Using the same line for the on/off state and the turntable was quite the eureka moment for me as well when I first figured that one out. Certainly made the design a lot more compact. Nice to see you're trying t...

Re: Help with On/Off inset 9x9 Hibachi

Bit more complicated design, but it has the bellows incorporated as well. It's a variation of the hibachi-setup I tend to use in my worlds, though I tend to have the bellows on the side instead of in the back. It might be a teensy bit more compact than my usual setup this way, actually :P http://www...

Re: Iron golems not dropping scrolls [4.40] [SMP]

Let's see whether I still remember the math for this: One scroll in 15 stacks of iron is 1 scroll per 960 iron, so a chance to drop of 1/960. This translates to a 959/960 chance to not drop a scroll. The odds of a scroll not dropping after 30 stacks of iron is (959/960)^1920 = 0.135, i.e. 13.5%. All...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion

You know, usually when I hear about bugs, I can make an educated guess on what might've gone wrong, but this one has me quite stumped. The closest thing I can think of is that they had some unintended interaction between their fireworks branch and the render-refactoring branch, but then it just gets...
