Um... I can't remember if TNT carts are in 1.5 but if they are then try sending one through the portal while ignited. That would hurt/take out the mobs, along with your portal, shack and part of the fortress. But fuck it.

Mostly likely what happened is a spider and an enderman wandered into your portal from the Overworld and were waiting for you on the other side. You should build a shack around your Overworld portal to keep mobs from entering it.

Fucking brilliant.

What did said particles look like? If they looked like little storm clouds with lightning then those are vanilla particles and aren't anything to worry about.

Those are normal particle that appear in VMC whenever you make a successful trade. Nothing new to BTW though FC might've changed how they appear.
