Re: Europa Universalis?
Wow, .. actually this is already in my game. All units have a main fire direction. For the exploration-ship this is starboard-aft, destroyer: starboard,.. frigate: ahead,.. The weapons do even have individual ammunition so one would have to turn when all weapons on a side are empty. [edit:]There is ...

Re: Europa Universalis?
Well in space every unit is an "air-unit". So your "base" is a mobile fleet (stationed in proximity of an asteroid). Most players tent to look "down" on their units which makes them extremely vulnerable to attacks from "above". Additionally because of full 3D-...

Making a fun game requires an other sort of creativity than writing code does.. Its like solving problems vs. seeing the problem.

Re: RTS Game Design Question: Upkeep to complex?
I've been busy and did some work on units and player handling. And I finally got to the point where the carriers and carried units were possible. So here is the result's current status. Some functionality is still missing. Like different attack paths (continuous movement, star pattern,.. ) and carri...

Re: RTS Game Design Question: Upkeep to complex?
Oh believe me they have. At least having some people not run the other direction when I want to discuss my thoughts on the game is an extreme motivation boost.. This is an one autodidact show. And most of my friends are more interested in short term mini games than in RTS games and the few that do l...

Re: RTS Game Design Question: Upkeep to complex?
I thought of the carriers more in an endgame-unit way.. They have to be huge to have ports for all the Child-Units so they only fit into Tier3 Shipyards.. well unless I would reduce the size of the Child-Units at least by half. http://rweniger.dyndns.org/stuff/AF3DCarrier_Draft.png The landing/docki...

Re: RTS Game Design Question: Upkeep to complex?
I always ruled carriers out to the point I just skip over them because I have very bad experience with the type I had in my first RTS-browser game. But the idea of that kind of carrier unit is intriguing. The Fighters/Bombers then would become some type of child-unit to the carrier which it uses to ...

Re: RTS Game Design Question: Upkeep to complex?
Maybe I got a bit over defensive in regards to the drone-concept. I got your point that the supply direction may confuse the gamers. But this way the units which are supplied by the supplier do not automatic defend it while they are waiting in line. So there has to be an extra base/supply defending ...

Re: RTS Game Design Question: Upkeep to complex?
Bringing fuel/supply to an unit is unfamiliar for normal people. But spacecraft and military vessels have supply being brought to them. A visual effect like a status bar on top of the units is certainly something I will get to once I figure out a way to do it (I have a guess but did not test the ide...

Re: RTS Game Design Question: Upkeep to complex?
So it took some time to get the game recorded but here it is:
The video does not just show the drone system but the first few minutes of game play. The Drones (Fuel) will be at work in the end of the video.

A Video it is then, seeing into that when I come home. Anno is a great series! Re: RTS Game Design Question: Upkeep to complex?
Thanks for all the feedback and help! The System does not need much more player management than the Refuel/Repair stations for Air units in Supreme Commander FA. There must be one in range of the unit/the unit's patrol path and in my case there should be a mass transporter assigned to transport mass...

Re: Game Design Question
@Gormador: Spaceships running out of fuel/energy is not an uncommon problem. Fully functional Satellites get sent into a decaying orbit when their fuel storage is depleted and refuelling would be uneconomical. In SiFi it did happen too. One of Stargate Atlantis's core plots is to get more zero-point...

RTS Game Design Question: Upkeep to complex?
Hi, I'm working on a RTS-game located in space. Units have several "Resources" like Ammunition, Fuel, Health. I want the gamer to have infrastructure like Fuel-, Ammunition-stations and mass-transportation (the only real resource) in place to sustain the unit's functionality. And the need ...

Chickenfarm: What you need for any animal farm is basicly three parts. 1. breeding 2. grow up 3. harvest/killing/storage You have to consider witch parts of the whole process you want to automate. Most times a partly automation will be much simpler and nearly as productive as an full automatic solut...

Wow,.. I never ever dreamed of saying the following but Digital Right Management seams to have a legitimate use case after all. Re: The comparator
I guess one could use this in combination with a weight sensitive pressure plate to count the number of items on it. After a threshold is reached you could kill the supply and blow them of the plate with a bellows.. So if this works it would enable us to build even distribution systems that are not ...

Re: Blender Game Engine vs. Unity
OK I did the InGame Camera controls in both.. Unity: ~0:30h of "how the fuck is this supposed to work?" 4h to the wanted result. Blender: ~0:10h of figuring it out and 1:30h to the same result. I count the faster Blender result towards my experience with it. In Unity I had to code it becau...

Blender Game Engine vs. Unity
I got the impression that more than one game designer is active in this community so I have a question for them. Preconditions: I'm planing to rewrite my Browser RTS as a 3D-multyplayer-RTS for PC(Windows). No fund whatsoever (So free-Unity version in the beginning and no expensive packages) (maybe ...

Do you depend on the pump mechanic? If not have a look at this: 7Rogmm3_PfI I did it a while ago so it is pre HC-B, it is my first and only video, English is not my first language and because of nervousness I did fail on the Redstone terminology. Never the less it works and with lenses you could bui...
