You can't. BTW is not a SMP mod yet, and won't be until, at the bare minimum, after the 1.8 update.

Just look straight down at the block you're placing it on top of - get up a few blocks higher if you have to. Sometimes it can be finicky getting a few of these blocks to place exactly how you want.

Face your detector straight up where rain will fall on it and connect it directly, with redstone, to your very first gear box.

It certainly is unique, that's for certain. What I would recommend though, if you want to practice building, is install Too Many Items, and start a separate world to infinitely test different contraptions to your liking, and take the designs back over afterwards. (After uninstalling TMI of course!)...

One that I know of is the lens, which I believe needs to wait for the next tech tree in order to be implemented. It would allow detector blocks to "see" farther than just right in front of them.

Windmills have one definite advantage over waterwheels, besides their aesthetic appeal: how do you plan on getting mechanical power to the Nether without water? ;P
