I think it has to do the placement of the portal in the nether. The portal spawned the side of nether mountain surrounded by lava. Sucks too because its lava for as far as i can see.

I'd get lag spikes accompanied with the screaming of poor Bloodwood logs being burned out of existence. I had to go round...

Thanks for the input. Ive never spent much time in the nether - the place causes my steve to become a walking dung factory. I wasnt sure about the ghast spawn requirements. I will probably use spawn pads in thee open areas of the trap to keep ghasts out and give me more spawn areas for mobs.

I have gotten to the point that a nether mob trap has become a necessity but before i start it I want to ask a few questions. The design Im considering is an inverted pyramid starting at layer 15. Ive finally made it to the nether and found a fortress but I cant seem to find nether growth. Do all nether fortresses have nether growth in them?

My base is on the border of a swamp so I decided to build my mob trap there to farm witches. I use a 9 x 9 checkerboard pattern with 2 air between each spawn level. I have a water flow directing mobs into 4 saws with the lower saws being set back 1 block to allow drops to fall into hoppers. It works...
