Not sure if this is mean to happen or not so am posting it here. I recently used a hand crank in a 'bad' way which caused it to break. when it did break I got 2 cobblestone blocks(the old ones) as a drop.

Your understanding is wrong. They average 1 string drop (if they have any left), but it's not consistent. I think of it as you're hacking up this creature first killing it, then trying to salvage web stored in some organ, resulting in the variability based on how much string you ruin in the process...

I have to say with the recent change to spiders only dropping one string I have to say that many times I kill spiders and get nothing. In a recent video you can watch that I killed several spiders and did not get a single string even though they did not spit their web at me. My understanding is that...
