Re: Embargo Lifted! (Open Early Game Discussion)
Disclaimer: I've haven't had as much time to play the early part as other (probably). My only issue is that usually i've used the "time-to-mine" as an indication for what tool is correct for the job. However playing the start there is no big difference (or at least it feels that way) betwe...

Re: The Ignorance Of Crowds: Why Open Development Is Crap
I wish i had such a place to toss design ideas back and forward. Usually it happens with close friends at some pub, but either we get drunk and i forget half the design ideas, we get drunk and design ideas get very crappy or other friends get annoyed because we are talking about such uninteresting t...

Re: Game Design: Skipping failed missions
Although i really understand and almost always agree with not catering to the lowest denominator I understand the problem they are facing: what if you get "stuck" in the first 3% of content? I felt this a few times in e.g. games that are combat oriented and for some reason the game designe...

But if you approach this problem without any knowledge of how spawning works it's trial (try to make best spawner) and error (spawn rates get lower after changes). Or am I missing something?

Re: Stuff that never felt right.
Fast/Fancy leaves. It's a graphic setting, why does it affect more than just the texture? Woosh- back on topic. How does it affect more than just the texture? I think he is talking about an old bug (fixed afaik) where leaves would behave differently: fast-> can place torches, does suffocate ; fancy...

Re: Stuff that never felt right.
Blocks that float. Yep, I said it. Blocks that float. It annoys me that blocks without anchors to land can just hover in the air, but pumpkins and sand, can't. I don't mind at all if they are stuck to other blocks which aren't floating. I imagine that it would be a pain in the ass to write in check...

Re: Balance Difficulty vs. Tedium
I would like to add that it's actually very good balancing question. I wanted to write something about this in the FC question "Is BTW the most difficult mod out there" but could not formulate what I am trying to say at that time. So there are a lot of difficult mods, but they make it diff...

Re: mod Suggestions?
My recommendation is buildcraft + forestry. It's really fun to build systems and breed bees, trees and now butterflies. Some stuff might be too simple (e.g. plop a farm to have infinite wood automatically) but otherwise it's quite interesting and engaging. Also really liked the farming aspect of Ind...

Re: Looking for a good C++ compiler
Wow you must be doing something strange to screw up a compiler. Usually you don't change anything there. Also there is almost 0 use from C++ compiler alone. As a suggestion i would give either Microsoft c++ compiler (included in MSVC++ studio or stand alone) or MinGW suite (this includes a lot of st...

Re: Vanilla Feature court - Session 1 - Analog Redstone
<disclaimer: i'm quite drunk> That is what i fear/love about BTW the most. Even if you say some overly stupid idea (e.g. how much would you mind the suggestion to change the farming and bonemeal mechanic?) somehow you make it work and integrate nicely. So what i'm trying to say is: can you share a s...

Re: Vanilla Feature court - Session 1 - Analog Redstone
Short answer: no Long answer: redstone is most developed and stable thing. In my opinion what could be added is only some minor things that emit redstone signal or react to it in some way. Having it depend on signal strength complicates otherwise quite clear and clean redstone design. I also feel th...

Re: Flower's Dev Diary (Week Of March 18th)
<...> I'm not just going nuts like most other MC-like games I'm seeing out there and trying to pretend like I can push in every direction at once and expect the game to still run at a decent frame rate. Doing so is pure game-dev noobery. Limitations always exist. That doesn't represent a problem wi...
