I think the implication of these "dragon vessels" is pretty clear . . . these temples were used for human sacrifice to the ender dragon. Maybe when a soul (in the from of xp) passes through the dragon vessel it is enslaved by the ender dragon, becoming an ender man. Who performed said hum...

I believe that is intended and also common knowledge.

It makes sense for buckets to create a temporary water source. It is the permanent aspect that Flowerchild removed.
