Well, there is one reason, which is enchanting it. Battle Axes are enchanted as a weapon, so if you wanted Unbreaking or Efficiency you'd need the Refined version.

Unfortunately, shovels are the single tool that use only a single ingot to craft, so the ones you're getting aren't a boost over ingots themselves when you inevitably melt down the spares you'll get. Here's hoping for more helmets!

I did. I have the copy in the BTB Mod folder, and a copy of it in the config folder of the .minecraft (or is it .bin? I'm on a different computer right now, but it's wherever the config folder is) folder. They are both set to have it disabled.
