Thanks guys, I ended up using a mixture of ideas, using a NOR latch and a BUDdy block on top of a turntable :)

One thing I've started doing is using large amounts of siding and moulding to break up flat planes, large flat walls make things considerably less interesting, so adding some 3D flavour to them always helps :)
