Netherrack is a slightly fleshy but stone-like block that can be found in abundance in the Nether. Netherrack is filled with the souls of the damned and has the special property of sustaining fire indefinitely. It can be mined extremely quickly with a pickaxe of iron or better, dropping the block in full, but is otherwise hard to break by hand or with any other tool. Netherrack defies gravity while in the Nether, but is subject to gravity in the Overworld and End. If a block of Netherrack is burning and then falls, it will reignite itself upon landing, making it possible to somewhat safely light up ravines and other areas significantly below the player.

Netherrack allows mobs to spawn in the Nether regardless of light levels. It also has a low resistance to blast damage, making it a poor defense against Ghast fireballs.

  • When placed, Netherrack will always face the same orientation, because of this, its texture can be used to navigate in the Nether, there is an "L" shape in the block looking at it from the top. When the "L" is in the top left corner and right side up, then you are facing north.
  • Possession, also known as "Nothing to Worry About", is what happens to living animals and villagers, but not the player, when exposed to the spirits of The Nether after a short time: infected souls start to come out of the Nether and leak into your world. These spirits are invisible, and will seep out a short distance from any Nether Portal, and will also infect potential hosts that enter the Nether entirely, warping their behavior to generally undesirable results.

Uses

Netherrack is the earliest obtainable source of permanent fire in the overworld (and thus, aside from lava, permanent light). Netherrack can be lit on fire by igniting a campfire that is placed directly on top of the Netherrack.
