While it appears deceptively simple (it's basically a box with a hole in it), the hopper allows the construction of many advanced mechanisms. Items that fall into the top of the hopper are added to its inventory. If the hopper receives Mechanical power through a axle or hand crank mounted on the side of the hopper, items from the hopper inventory will start ejecting out the spout on the bottom of the hopper (and stop when power it cut). Items may be ejected into the air, directly into any other block that has an inventory (chest, dispenser, etc.), or a minecart with chest parked beneath it. If all the slots in a hopper inventory contain items, the hopper will produce redstone power. As the power output will stop once there is a empty slot in the hopper inventory, the redstone power can be used in builds to signal that the hopper is getting full (for example you can place redstone dust between the hopper and a Light Block.

Filtering

The hopper also contains an extra inventory slot in which you may place various items that act as a filter so you can determine what items can enter the hopper inventory. By combining multiple hoppers with different filters and a stream of water, you can sort the items produced by a mob trap or farm.

The types of hopper filters and what items will or will not pass through the filters are described in the following table.

Keep in Mind

• The redstone power emitted from a hopper without a empty inventory slot will reach the block beneath it. So a powered rail placed below the hopper will become powered if the hopper has no empty inventory slots.
• You may place multiple hoppers in a horizontal trench. But to keep the items/blocks separated put another block between each hopper.
• Hoppers are flammable and will be destroyed if caught on fire.
• If gravel passes through a wicker filter, it will be converted into sand and flint. The flint will remain on top of the hopper or continue along the stream of water.
• Beware when filtering Ground Netherrack! Dropping more than 7 units of ground netherrack into the top of an unpowered Hopper without replacing the soul sand will cause the hopper to break, destroying one of the gears, the wooden corner, and the wooden pressure plate. It will also spawn you a cuddly new friend.
• A hopper with a soul sand filter can only hold a maximum of 100 XP. When powered it will drop a large XP orb as soon as enough small orbs have been collected.
• Heads/Skulls are blocks and not items, thus will be blocked by iron bars.
