As the name suggests, the Buddy Block is a BUD (block update detector). It reacts to changes in neighboring blocks and outputs a short redstone pulse to a single side (determined during placement) when they occur. Buddy has a wide range of uses including everything from detecting events such as doors being opened, to detecting the various growth stages of plants, to aiding in counting the number of Turntable rotations that have occurred when automating the production of Pottery. Note that Buddy will NOT react to changes in redstone elements (redstone dust, repeaters, and redstone torches) to help prevent creating feedback loops as Buddy powers these same elements on and off.

Detection

  • Buddy blocks will detect most updates in surrounding blocks
    • Vanilla Dispensers and Noteblocks will not trigger buddys
  • Placing redstone dust, torches, and repeaters will not trigger buddys
    • Removing redstone dust, torches and repeaters will trigger updates
  • Detector blocks can trigger buddy blocks with a block of space between them
    • This includes airblocks and diagonals

Applications

  • Growth Timers
    • Cocoa Beans, Carrots, Potatoes and Wheat will all trigger updates upon advancing a growth stage
  • Memory Cell component when used with block dispensers
  • Compact Counter
  • Timers for Bellows
  • Timing for Pottery Production
  • Automatic farms for updatable blocks (Mossy Cobble, Mycelium, Grass, etc.)

Keep in Mind

  • Can only be crafted at an Anvil.
  • Note Blocks will not trigger an update
  • Buddy blocks facing towards any updatable redstone block will cause a feedback loop
  • The pulse generated by buddy blocks is very short, some blocks will need this signal extended to even pick up any change in state
  • Buddy blocks placed on turntables will allow clay above them to spin
