Mushrooms are edible—though not very filling—members of the fungi kingdom. They are photophobic and can only grow in dark areas, The Nether, or on Mycelium at any light level. Mushrooms can be collected by hand, and can be planted on top of most solid, flat surfaces, not only dirt, in light levels of 12 or below for the Red Mushroom and in total darkness for Brown Mushroom.

Mushrooms planted on Mycelium may naturally grow into Huge Mushrooms, provided that there is enough room.

A mushroom planted in suitable conditions described below will try to spread to nearby blocks, generating a mushroom up to two tiles away along either axis (though the probability distribution is not uniform in this area, favoring nearer tiles). Growth is limited so that they only spread if there are fewer than five mushrooms of the same type in a 9×9×3 volume centered on the mushroom.

Brown Mushrooms are a delicious variety of mushroom only found deep in the recesses of third-strata caves. Eaten raw, they only restore one sixth of a shank of hunger, but when used as an ingredient they can greatly enhance the nutritional quality—and quantity—of other Food items. They require absolute darkness to grow.

Red Mushrooms have poisonous qualities. They can be found in a variety of locations on the surface, often generated as individual specimens under the shade provided by a tree. They may also be found growing in the Nether. Eating a red mushroom raw will restore one sixth of a shank of hunger, and inflict 2 hearts of damage through poison. They require a light level of 12 or below to grow.
