Axes are to wood what pickaxes are to stone. They are used to cut wood as whole blocks from trees, break up vegetation, split wood into shafts or wooden planks, and also serve as an improvised weapon. When used as a weapon, axes are stronger than other tools but weaker than swords of the same type, take double durability damage, and also do not have the ability to block. The exception to this is the Refined Axe, which can block, and the Battle Axe, which acts as a full weapon. Axes other than Soulforged Steel can be left embedded in wood or most wood-like blocks for storage.

See Tools and Weapons for a full list with more details and info about durability and damage.
